On a quiet bank holiday, we take the chance to sit down and be honest about the numbers. In this episode James walks through the harvest field by field, laying out exactly what the drought has cost us, from milling wheat well down on budget to disappointing oats and mustard, and just how far the market now needs to move for the industry to make money. It is a frank and rarely seen look at the real finances behind a difficult year, and the thinking behind next season's rotation.

It would not be a bank holiday without a few surprises, and this one delivers, from a gate rammed clean out of the ground to a burnt out van, and a bridge between two of our blocks that has quite alarmingly collapsed. There is a fonder moment too as we say goodbye to our brilliant harvest team, with the students heading home after a superb season.

With the rape now emerging after the long awaited rain, and the team off to the Farm Progress Show in America, the next chapter is already beginning. From an honest look at the money to the first green shoots of next year, this is another look behind the scenes of a modern farming business.
