Farm update 414 Dairy farming in New Zealand part 1.

4.00pm - Friday 20th February 2026 9,236

Dairy farming in New Zealand is very different to the UK. Milk solids per kg per cow is measured instead of litres of milk per cow, the animals are smaller, cross breads feature heavily, most of the grass is irrigated and general grass management is very different.

Join me and my friends (who I did the Institute of Ag Management Leadership course with in 2012) as we travel from Te Anau to Riversdale, in Northern Southland to our first dairy farm. Ivan Lines (who organised our week) gives updates and commentary on the areas we travel through, the crops we see and goes through how sheep farming has changed over the years as well as lots of detail about NZ dairy production.
